Recap of: Negotiating your Startup Salary and Equity [video]

The startup scene in Boston has been buzzing over the past year.  More and more founders are raising money to solve big problems and are now looking to hire great talent.  The one problem for those of us who would like to help those founders is that there isn’t a ton of information about what to think about or expect as an employee at a startup.

Through DartBoston, we are looking to create more events geared toward startup employees and those looking to work at startups.

In our first event, we focused on startup compensation and what to expect when going to work at a startup from a salary and equity standpoint.  On the panel we had Jennifer Lum of Apricot Capital and former employee at Apple, Quattro and mCube, Brian Kalma of Gemvara and former employee at Zappos and Gilt Groupe, and Dave Cappillo of Goodwin Procter.

Listen to the video below to hear what the panel had to say about:

  • Why one should work at a startup (hint: it’s not just about the upside)
  • Trusting the founding team to take care of you
  • Knowing your value before you sit at the negotiation table
  • What questions to ask when negotiating your compensation package
  • When to get out of a startup
  • Understanding the concept of employee stock options and vesting
  • When to ask for a raise in salary and equity
